The small business website checklist for 2026
The essentials that turn a visitor into a customer — and the ones most sites still get wrong.
Most small business websites aren't bad because they're ugly. They're bad because they miss the handful of things that actually convert a visitor into a call, a booking or a quote. Here's the checklist we build every homepage against.
1. A single, obvious next step
Every page should make one action impossible to miss — call, book, or request a quote. If a visitor has to think about what to do next, you've already lost some of them. One primary button, repeated as they scroll.
2. Click-to-call on mobile
The majority of local searches happen on a phone, often with urgency. A tappable phone number pinned where thumbs reach is the single highest-impact element for most service businesses.
3. Clear services and service area
Spell out exactly what you do and where you do it. This is what makes you show up for the right searches and what reassures a visitor they're in the right place.
4. Trust signals near the top
- Licensed / insured / certified (only what's true and provable)
- Years in business or jobs completed
- Real reviews or testimonials (never fabricated)
- A real photo of you or your team
5. Speed
A site that takes more than a few seconds to load loses visitors before they see anything. Fast, mobile-first performance isn't a nice-to-have — it's the floor. It also helps you rank on Google.
6. Mobile-first design
Design for the phone first, because that's where most of your visitors are. If it works beautifully on mobile, it'll be fine on desktop; the reverse is rarely true.
7. Basic SEO foundations
Proper titles, a clear structure, and pages that target what people actually search (like “website for plumbers in [city]”). You don't need to obsess over SEO on day one, but the foundations should be there so you can grow.
8. You own it
Your code, your design, your content and your domain should be in your name — not locked inside a platform you can't leave. Ownership is what protects the investment.
